Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on July 29, 1819 and again in 1928.
The arms show St. Martin, patron saint of the city, cutting his cloak for a beggar.
The composition already appears on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from the 14th century. Below the horse was a small shield with the double-tailed lion of Bohemia. The city at the time was a possession of the Kings of Bohemia.
All later seals show the same composition, with or without the arms of Bohemia until the early 19th century. The present arms are in use since 1928 and are based on these seals.
In 1819 suddenly a new shield appears. The new arms show in the upper part the lion of Bohemia, and in the lower half a symbol looking like a capital letter H. The meaning thereof is not known. These arms were sometimes used in the 19th century and also from 1920-1928.
