Origin/meaning

The arms are first known from a seal from the late 15th century, but the arms are supposedly granted in 1444.

The unicorn in the arms is taken from the arms of the Von Waldenfels family, who acquired the city in 1430. The arms basically did not change since and were officially granted in 1952.
Nevertheless, in the 19th century many different varieties on these arms were known, such as the ones below, as shown by Hupp in the 1920s:

Wappen von Lichtenberg (Oberfranken)/Coat of arms (crest) of Lichtenberg (Oberfranken)

The arms as used until 2009
Wappen von Lichtenberg (Oberfranken)/Coat of arms (crest) of Lichtenberg (Oberfranken)

The arms by Hupp in the Kaffee Hag albums +/- 1925
