Origin/meaning
Osterburken was a possession of the Counts of Hanau and received city rights in 1356 from Emperor Charles IV. In 1376 the city became part of the State of Mainz and remained so until 1802. From the first known seal, dating from the 16th century, the city has used the wheel of Mainz on its arms. In the 19th century, when the city was part of Baden, the colours were changed from black in silver, but in the late 19th century the colours of Mainz were restored. However, the colours were exchanged, the original arms showed a white wheel on a red field.
