BERKA/WERRA

State : Thüringen
District (Kreis) : Wartburgkreis (until 1994 Eisenach)
Additions: 1994 Fernbreitenbach, Gospenroda, Herda, Horschlitt (1974 Auenheim-Rienau), Vitzeroda (1950 Abteroda, Gasteroda); 1995 Wünschensuhl

Wappen von Berka/Werra

Official blazon

In Blau drei goldene Türme mit schwarzen Dächern und jeweils einem Kreuz auf der Spitze, der mittlere Turm überhöht; im Schildgrund eine goldene, schwarz schraffierte elliptische Scheibe.

Origin/meaning

The arms with the three towers were granted at the same time as the city rights in 1847. The three towers first appear on a seal since the 17th century, with the middle tower slightly higher. Since the early 19th century the three towers are of equal height. The small crosses are seen as a symbol of the Abbey of Hersfeld, to which the town belonged for a long time.

The arms during DDR times until 1972

From 1972-1990 the city used arms divided, with in the upper part the three towers on a hill, and below in the third quarter a crossed hammer and sickle and in the fourth quarter a wavy bar, for the Werra river. I have no picture of these arms. Any picture is welcome !
