Origin/meaning

The arms consists of two parts. Until 1818 the council used generally the arms of the medieval De Roubaix family, which played a major role in the city until 1502. Their arms are ermine with a red chief.

In 1818 the council adopted new arms showing industrial bellows with above and below symbols for the textile industry (bobbins and spindle). The meaning of the star is not clear.

In 1859 the council decided to combine the old arms with the industrial one and the arms have not changed since.
