Origin/meaning

The background of the shield, semé of quatrefoils in gold on a field of red, is taken from the coat of arms of Count Pontchartrain, who was the Minister of Marine in France at the time Detroit was founded. The black fess across the center of the shield is taken from the coat of arms of Cadillac, the founder of the City of Detroit, who was sent here by Count Pontchartrain. The field of red has been substituted for the field of blue of Pontchartrain’s arms, symbolizing the arm of the service to which this regiment belongs, Artillery.

The arms were originally approved for the 182d Field Artillery Regiment on 26 June 1930. It was redesignated for the 182d Field Artillery Battalion on 31 July 1943. It was redesignated for the 182d Artillery Regiment on 9 September 1960. The insignia was redesignated for the 182d Field Artillery Regiment on 9 August 1972.
