3RD CAVALRY REGIMENT, US ARMY

History : Constituted 19 May 1846 as Regiment of Mounted Riflemen. Organized 12 October 1846 at Jefferson Barrack, Mo. Redesignated 3 August 1861 as 3rd Cavalry. Inactivated 15 July 1942 at Fort Benning, Ga. Personnel and Equipment transfered to 3rd Armored Regiment. Reorganized and redesignated 18 January 1943 as 3rd Cavalry, Mechanized. Activated 15 March 1943 at Camp Gordon, Ga.

Shield : Vert, on a cross argent, a tower of the field; on a chief or a bend gules.
Crest : On a wreath of the colors a trumpet palewise or.

Origin/meaning

The green field alludes to the original green facings of the Regiment's Uniforms. The Trumpet was used as Insignia by the Regiment. The Cross alludes to the city of Vera Cruz in Mexico were the Regiment landed in 1847. It also took part in the capture of the City of Mexico, which is indicated by the Tower. The Chief alludes to the arms of Lorraine, and service there in World War I.
