The town was the seat of the Lords of Absberg and the arms are derived from the arms of the family. <br>
Until 1820 the seals and images of the arms showed only the chevron, sometimes in a divided shield (red and blue), but mainly in a silver field. In the early 19<sup>th</sup> century a small star was placed in the point, which was later replaced by the hills, as in the above arms. These are a canting element (Berg=mountain).
