ARRAN (District council)

Incorporated into: 1975 Cunninghame District Council (1996 North Ayrshire Area Council)

Arms (crest) of Arran

Official blazon

Parted per pale engrailed: dexter, parted per fess Gules and Argent, in chief three cinquefoils two and one Ermine and in base a lymphad, sails furled Sable, flagged of the First; sinister, Or, an oak tree Proper surmounted of a fess chequy Azure and Argent.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 15, 1967.

A differenced version of the arms of Buteshire County Council to which the district belonged, in which there are references to the strong Hamilton and Stewart links with the county. The party line has been made engrailed and an oak tree added in the sinister half of the shield as a special allusion to the close connection with Arran of the Hamilton family.Literature:
