Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on April 29, 1818 and confirmed on February 16, 1847.
The origin of these arms is not known. The local council applied for the arms in the early 19th century, but why the composition was chosen is not known. The arms obviously indicate the importance of agriculture for the village, and show a farmer holding three wheat-ears. The farmer also holds a banner with a lion. As the council did not apply for colours, the banner was granted in the Dutch national colours (blue and gold). In 1818 Belgium formed part of the Netherlands. When the arms were confirmed by the Belgian government in 1847 the colours were not changed. Most likely the local council applied for the colours of Vlaanderen, in gold a black lion and not for the Dutch lion...
