Origin/meaning

The town developed around a monastery and became a city in 1200. The arms are probably a combination of the arms of the Counts of Jülich and a symbol of the Virgin Mary, the star. Both already appear in the seals from the early 14^th century. Sometimes the star has 6 points, but the present arms are based on the seal of 1632, which shows five points.

In the early 20^th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffee Hag albums. These arms show the same elements, but in a different composition.
