Origin/meaning

Even though Bardejov was a city in the 13th and 14th century, the city did not use arms. The seal showed St. Aegidius, the patron saint of the city. The arms appear in the 15th century and were officially granted in 1453 by King Ladeslav V. Being a border city, the arms symbolise the importance as a fortress. The large arms of the city often show an angel as supporter, see below.
