Origin/meaning

Bopfingen was already mentioned in 1241 as an imperial city. The oldest known seal dates from 1279 and shows the imperial eagle. On a second seal, known since 1283, the eagle is flanked by two stars. The small breastshield first appears in 1462 as arms, and later also on the seals. The origin or meaning of the small shield is not known. The arms were formally granted in 1955.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
