Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 23, 1936.

Bredsted was mentioned as a town in 1510 and the oldest known seal dates from the late 16th century. The seal already showed a bridge and some waves. All later seals and images have shown the same composition, but the size and shape of the bridge have changed considerably.
Bredsted was on the crossing of several trading routes in the area and the bridge probably symbolises the connection of the city with the neighbouring islands. The waves symbolise the North Sea.
