Saint Anthony the Great (c 251– 356), also known as Anthony the Abbot, Anthony of Egypt, Anthony of the Desert, Anthony the Anchorite and Father of All Monks, was an Egyptian Christian saint and the prominent leader among the Desert Fathers. Anthony lived in Alexandria for much of his life.

Saint Anthony was a very popular saint in early medieval times. His is often shown with a pig, one of his symbols. His main symbol is the Tau-cross, which is more often used than the saint itself.
