Origin/meaning

The meaning and origin of these arms is not completely known. The arms are mentioned in several historical sources, and were allegedly already used immediately after the conquest over the Moors in 1251. However, no historical data are available to proof this.

In any case the arms were used in the 18th and 19th century and have not changed since. All histrorical descriptions mentiona a tower, but sometimes a single, sometimes a double tower. The tower probably represents the local castle, the Castillo de Sancti Petri, which is situated on a small island in the bay, and was founded in the 13th century byBenedetto Zacarías. This is probably indicated by the two stones or rocks in the arms.

The meaning of the two lions is not known.
