CIREBON

Province : Jawa Barat

Cheribon.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms show a shrimp, which is a canting symbol, the name can be derived from Javanese words meaning a river rich in shrimp. I have no information on the meaning of the upper half of the arms. During colonial times the city used different arms as shown below. These arms were adopted on September 26, 1930.

Colonial arms
The shrimps in these arms are again canting. The upper half shows a star, a symbol for progress of the city. The motto Per aspera ad astra (One reaches the stars only through difficulties) also indicates progress.
