Origin/meaning

Datteln became a town in 1593 and a city in 1936, but old seals or arms were not known.

The present arms were granted in 1938 and show in the right part the ring, taken from the arms of the Lords von Vrydag, who lived in Datteln in the early Middle Ages. A seal of Goswin von Vrydag is known from 1326.
The cross in the left half is the cross of the State of Köln, to which the town belonged for many centuries.
