The arms were granted on July 29, 1937.

The arms are derived from the arms of the Costere family, Lords of Deerlijk mentioned in the 15<sup>th</sup> century. As these are the oldest known Lords of Deerlijk, the local council applied to be allowed to use these arms as municipal arms. The arms are derived from an engraving in a tomb in the local church.
