In Silber eine rote Burg mit zwei Zinnentürmen, in deren offenem Tor ein wachsender, rot gekleideter Bischof mit silbernem Untergewand, in der Linken den goldenen Krummstab haltend, die Rechte zum Segen erhoben; darunter ein von Blau und Rot geteiltes Schildchen; oben eine schräg gestellte, eingekerbte, von Silber und Rot gevierte Fahne an goldener Stange, unten ein silberner Wellenbalken.

Origin/meaning

Dettelbach received city rights in 1484 and the oldest known seal dates from the same time. The seal already shows the same composition as the arms. The castle symbolises the city, the bishop is the bishop of Würzburg, who granted the city rights. The small arms show in the upper half the arms of the State of Würzburg and in the lower a canting river (Bach).

The arms are widely used as such since around 1500 and have not changed since. However, sometimes only the small shield has been used as arms for the city as shown by Hupp in the 1920s, see below.
