The Spanish explorers and early missionaries who first brought the Gospel to Florida over five hundred years ago are acknowledged by the Spanish colors red and gold (yellow), and by the tower and lion from the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Castille.

The Latin cross reversed stands for Saint Peter.
