Origin/meaning
The left arms were officially granted on December 21, 1977.
The lion and cross in the second arms are taken from the former arms (see below), and are combined with a blue wavy bar symbolising the Rhine river.
The previous arms were granted in 1935.
The knight is St. Michael, the patron saint of the city, which also appeared on the first known seal of the city, from around 1300. Before 1345 the saint held a small shield with the cross of the State of Köln. After 1345 this cross was replaced by the lion of the counts of Jülich, who acquired the city in 1345
