Origin/meaning

The lion in the arms is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, which ruled the city in the 13th century and after 1428. The seals of the city always showed the lion, as did the historical arms. In the last century the hearts and crown were added to distinguish the arms from the arms of neighbouring cities.
