Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The lily at the left symbolizes the Blessed Virgin on whose feast day bishop was ordained. The other lily bears a wound signifying the stigmata of St. Francis, bishop's patron saint.

The dove commemorates Holy Spirit Parish of which bishop was pastor and complements his motto.

The pearl is inspired by the German root "Grete", coming from Margaretha, which has the Latin word for pearl. The trefoil comes from an (unrelated) Meissner family coat of arms honoring bishop's mother
