MAMONOVO (Мамоново)

Federal subject : Kaliningrad Oblast

Arms of/Герб Mamonovo

Official blazon

Щит пересеченный золото-черный с узким волнообразным лазоревым поясом. В верхней части щита заходящее червленое солнце с червлеными же лучами-лепестками, в нижней - две крестообразно положенные серебряные с золотыми рукоятками секиры.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on April 20, 2000.

The two axes are a canting symbol and the old arms of the city, in German known as Heiligenbeil (holy-ax). According to legend, the Teutonic knights could not cut down a sacred oak in what is now the town until the Bishop of Ermland consecrated the ax they used.

On May 15, 1938 new arms were granted, showing a divided shield with in chief a wolf and in base the axes.

The meaning of the sun in the current arms I do not know.
