Origin/meaning

The arms are known since 1374. The oldest arms of the city are known from 1331 and showed a city wall with a rooster, the symbol of the Counts of Henneberg (Henne = chicken), who ruled the city. In 1374 married Margarethe von Henneberg with Balthasar, Count of Thüringen and Meissen. The city thereby adopted the quartered arms of Thüringen (striped lion) and Meissen (black lion).
