Official blazon

Geteilt von Rot über Gold. Oben hinter einer gezinnten silbernen Mauer mit schwarzem Tor ein gezinnter silberner Turm. Unten auf grünem Rasen ein springender roter Hirsch verfolgt von einem roten Jagdhund.

Origin/meaning

The upper half of the arms simply symbolises the fortified city. The lower half of the arms was probably added in 1284, when the city received the 'Market rights of St. Aegidius'. The symbols of St. Aegidium, patron saint of the hunt, are a hare and a dog. Until the mid 18^th century the lower half of the arms showed a dog running after a hare. Probably by mistake the hare was replaced by a deer in the 18^th century.
