Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 31, 1978.

The eagle and the book are symbols of St. John the Apostle, patron saint of the city. The shells symbolise the first name given to the city. The motto shows the dates of foundation (1893) and city rights (1953).

The shield is flanked by sugar cane and coffee, the main crops in the region.
