Origin/meaning

The arms were adopted in 1990.

The first quarter shows the arms of Sachsen, as a large part of the district historically belonged to the Duchy of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, as well as for the Duchy Sachsen-Gotha, the Principality of Sachsen and the Prussian province of Sachsen, as parts belonged to these territories for some time in history. The lion is the lion of Schwarzburg, as the town of Gehren in the district historically belonged to the Duchy of Schwarzburg. The base shows (a poor representation of) the rooster of the Henneberg County, to which also parts of the district historically belonged.
