Origin/meaning

The arms are canting. Jelenia Gora (and the German name Hirschberg) means "deer mountain".

According to legend the town received its name during the Middle Ages when Prince Boleslaw was hunting a deer that recovered from his wound in a natural hot spring and so a spa was founded at the site. The oldest seal of the city is known since the 14th century and shows the above arms.

In 1599 Emperor Rudolf II granted the city arms with the deer, but on a shield divided silver and blue and as a crest on the helmet a dear between silver and blue wings. The deer was holding a trefoil, instead of the present acorn branch. The arms with a divided shield were used until the late 20th century, although the colour of the deer varied between red and natural colour and with or without golden hoofs, as can be seen from the images below.
