Origin/meaning

The tower is common to all the arms associated with the families of Roncalli, the bar only in the arms of the Roncalli di Rovigo family. These are the basis of the arms.

The fleur-de-lis were granted to him by the Heraldic Commission of the Holy See on his appointment in 1925 to the titular See of Areopolis (Rabba in Palestine) as the emblems of that See.

The chief is that borne by the Patriarchs of Venice in modern times, and there is precedent for its retention on election to the Holy See in the arms borne by St. Pius X (1903-14).
