Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 11, 1931.

The arms symbolise trading and shipping, the major industries in the town.

Jyväskylä became a city in 1837. In the same year the city asked for a coat of arms. Tow unheraldic designs were prososed, the first showing a natural landscape with a lake and sun in the uppar part, and in the lower a caduceus and an oar. The second proposal simply showed the year 1837 in Roman numerals.

The city Senate did not agree with eiter, but combined them in a new design, showing in the upper half the monogramme of Emperor Nicholas I and the year 1837 in Roman numerals, and in the base the caduceus and oar. These arems were approved by the city.

The 1838 arms

In 1861 B. Kene redesigned the arms, showing the initial of the Emperor in Cyrillic and a crossed spade and axe. In the upper right corner the arms of Vasa/Turku province. These arms were never approved.

After the Finnish independence the imperial symbols were no longer acceptable. In a new proposal Akseli Gallen-Kallelan proposed the arms below, in which the upper part was replaced by an open book. This design was not approved.

In 1931 the current arms were designed and approved. However, the original drawing was not of good heraldic quality and the arms were redrawn in 1953.

Currently the city uses a crown, but as the arms have not been officially re-granted, this is not part of the official design. These arms are shown above though.
