Origin/meaning

In 1174 Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa built a castle around which the town developed. From the castle is now only a ruin left. Hence the Imperial eagle as the main charge of the arms. The eagle can also be seen on the seal of the town from the 13^th century. The small shield is the arms of the State of Köln, to which the town belonged from 1424-1762. Different arms were shown in a roll of arms from around 1500, see below.
