Armoiries de Lens (Hainaut)

Official blazon

De gueules à trois lions d'argent, armés, lampassés et couronnés d'or.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 30, 1999.

The arms are based on the seal of lens used from 1572 until 1794. The municipality firest applied for arms in 1939, but due to the Second World War the procedure was cancelled. In 1954 the municipality tried again, but, as tehre were already more arms with three lions, the heraldic council wante dto simplify the arms and add the letter L. In 1964 the municipality gave up. Finally in 1999 the arms were granted after all.
