Origin/meaning

The city was founded by Knight Hermann von Spegel between 1290 and 1294. The oldest surviving seal, however, dates from 1393. It already showed a city wall and three towers, surrounded by roses. The lion in the gate is the lion of Hessen and has been in use since the late 19th century. Previous images showed a blue lion in a red field or a golden lion in a red field. As these lions are of uncertain origin, the lion of Hessen was used instead. When the lion actually was added to the arms is not known, but most likely in the late 15th century.
