Origin/meaning

The town became a city in 1358 and was ruled until 1392 by the Lords of Randerath. The oldest, late 13^th century, seal shows the arms of the Lords of Randerath, a chequered shield of 25 fields. The second seal, which dates from the early 15^th century, shows the present arms, only with a crowned lion. The lion is the lion of Jülich, as in 1392 the town became a possession of the Dukes of Jülich. The present arms, with the uncrowned lion, are in use since the 18^th century.

In the early 20^th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffe Hag albums. These arms show the lion, but in the base a checquered bar, probably taken wrongly from the arms of the Counts of the Mark (?).
