Origin/meaning

The oldest seal of the town dates from 1374. It shows a birch tree on a mountain, which makes it a canting composition; Maie is birch and Berg is mountain. The fence around the tree appeared in the early 18^th century. In the 19^th century the tree was changed into an apple, or linden tree, in the late 19^th century the tree was restored as a birch tree.
