Origin/meaning

The arms were first officially granted on April 10, 1858 and again in 1994.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city from 1366. The city wall and towers obviously indicate the city itself. The meaning of the bird holding a ring and the heart are unknown. The city has used the arms thus since th 14th century, but the arms were only officially registered in 1858. The colour of the arms however still varied from gold on blue to red on silver, as can be seen in the images below. On January 2, 1941 the city received new arms; in a red and green divided shield a golden boar. These arms were abandoned in 1945. Until 1994 the city used the arms again only red in silver.

In 1994 the present coulours were restored.
