MARBURG (MR)

State : Hessen
Incorporated into : 1973 Marburg-Biedenkopf

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 16, 1930.

The arms show the lion of Hessen, as the Counts of Hessen for a long time had their residence in the city. They also founded the first Protestant university in the country. The tomb of the Counts of Hessen is in the local church. Besides the Counts the German Order also had a strong influence in the city from 1234-1809. The castle of the Order was next to the palace of the counts the most impressive building in the whole of Hessen. The arms of the Order are thus held by the lion.
