Arms of Merkinė

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 7, 1569 and regranted on February 20, 1996.

The arms reflect the feast of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The white unicorn is also one of symbols of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and here it honours Merkinė as a city of State (in the 14th-18th centuries Merkinė was not just the small town as it is now, but one of most important cities of Lithuania).
