Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1541 by Count Georg of Erbach, when the city received its new seal. The decoration in the lower field appears on the seal from 1541, but is not mentioned in the grant.

The arms have not changed since.

The stars are derived from the arms of the Counts of Erbach, but why the division of the shield was chosen is not known.
