MOSELLE

Origin/meaning

The first quarter shows the arms of the State of Metz. The second quarter shows the historical arms of the former Duchy of Lorraine. The third quarter shows the arms of the former Duchy of Barrois. The fourth quarter shows the arms of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The escutcheon shows the arms of the city of Metz. The arms reflect the historical regions, parts of which form the present départment.
