German In Silber ein offenes rotes Stadttor, bestehend aus zwei durch einen Bogen verbundenen, dreifach gezinnten Seitentürmen mit je zwei schwarzen Fenstern und je einer nach innen weisenden, abgestützten Zinnenplattform, auf dem Bogen ein Turm mit drei schwarzen Fenstern, Zinnenplatte und Spitzdach; im Torbogen ein nach rechts gelehnter goldener Schild, darin ein hersehender, gold gekrönter schwarzer Stierkopf mit geschlossenem Maul und silbernen Hörnern, auf dem Schild ein rechts gekehrter blauer Kübelhelm mit einer Pfauenfederrosette in natürlichen Farben.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on April 10, 1858.

Kalen received city rights in 1253 from Heinrich Borwin III, Lord of Rostock, but was relocated to Neukalen in 1281. The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city dating from 1283, see below. The seal and arms show a city gate with the arms and crest of the Lords of Rostock.
