NISSEDAL

Province : Vestfold og Telemark (until 2020 Telemark)

Coat of arms (crest) of Nissedal
Official blazon
Norwegian

På gull grunn tre raude nisseluver.

English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 30, 1992.

The arms show three heads of a kind of legendary midgets (nisse, tomte), making the arms canting. The name of the village, however, has nothing to do with midgets. However, similar red hats were commonly worn until the late 19th century by farmers and common folk.
