Former province : Itä-Suomi (until 1997 Pohjois-Karjala)
Additions: 1973 Nurmeksen maalaiskunta

Nurmes Kuntavaakuna / Kommunvapen

Official blazon

Punaisessa kentässä kolme hopeista karhukeihäänkärkeä pystyssä vierekkäin.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on 11-2-1952.

The arms show three tips from bear hunting spears. Bear hunting used to be practised in the surroundings. They also are a reminder of the local hero Olli Tiainen.
