NYKØBING

Region : Sjælland
Amt (until 2007) : Vestsjælland (until 1970 Holbæk)
Incorporated into : 1970 Nykøbing-Rørvig (2007 Odsherred)

Coat of arms (crest) of Nykøbing (Sjælland)

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially registered in 1938.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, known since 1519, but probably dating from the 14th century. The meaning of the crescent is not known, the name means new-city and the crescent (a new moon), may be seen as a canting symbol.
The crescent can also refer to the bay, in which the city is situated. The stars are also present in the seal of the Ods Herred, which surrounded the town, but it is not known whether the Herred has taken the stars from the town or vice versa.
