Dutch	(1819) Van lazuur, beladen met een drietoornige poort van goud, onder aan den ingang van dezelve een schild geschakeerd van lazuur en goud. (1843) Eenen gulden schild met een onversterkt kasteel, de valpoort opgehaeld van rood koleur, met wit metselwerk met dry bedekte torens, doorboord en gedekt met eenen bol ook van goud, de onderste helft van de poort belaeden met een schildeken met vijf ryen zilveren en blauwe ruyten. (1988) In goud een geopend kasteel met opgetrokken valdeur en drie gedekte torens van keel, gemetseld, verlicht en getopt met een bol van zilver, de benedenhelft van de poort beladen met een schild, geschaakt in vijf rijen van zilver en van lazuur. Het schild getopt met een stedekroon met vijf torentjes en gehouden door een Sint-Arnold en een Sint-Bertijn, alles van goud.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 10, 1819, in new colours on February 2, 1843 and with supporters on March 1, 1988.

The arms show a castle with in the gate the arms of the medieval Lords of Oudenburg. The castle (Burcht) is a canting element. The castle already appeared on the oldest seal of the city, dating from 1226. All later seals showed a castle, but the size and shape of the castle has changed considerably during the centuries. The small shield appeared for the first time in the 16^th century.

The arms were initially granted in the Dutch national colours, as the municipality did not provide any coloured image to the Dutch College of Arms. After the Belgian independence, the colours were changed to the historical colours.
In 1988 the supporter from the old arms of Roksem was added as well as an image of saint Arnolus, founder of the Oudenburg Abbey. As the city was one of the oldest in Flanders, a mural crown was added.
