Wappen von Pappenheim

Official blazon

In Blau ein linksgewendeter silberner Kübelhelm mit goldener Helmdecke, darauf ein schwarzer Mohrenkopf mit roter Stirnbinde.

Origin/meaning

The arms show a Moor's head on a helmet, which is probably derived from the arms of the Lords of Pappenheim. In the oldest seal of the city, dating from the first half of the 14th century, a man's head on a helmet is seen. On a second seal from 1340 it seems to be a Moor's head, and the present arms are based on this seal. It was used until the 18th century, when it was replaced by a single head, without the helmet. It has once even been mentioned that the arms were a standing female moor. In the beginning of this century the old arms were restored according to the seal from 1340.
