Impaled. Dexter: Azure a cross fleurettie or, in base barry-wavy of five azure and argent, issuing from a mount of three coupeaux of the second; Sinister: Argent, on a cross gules a pastoral staff or in pale between three escallops or, two in fesse and one in base; over all, in chief, an open book proper, garnished and inscribed with the letters X P of the third.

Origin/meaning

The arms show the arms of the Archdiocese of Boston with the personal arms of the Archbishop. These are based upon the heraldic emblems of his two name Saints: St. Richard of Chichester (the book and the pastoral staff) and St. James the Greater, apostle, (the three scallop shells) as traditionally borne by pilgrims to the famous shrine of St. James at Compostella in Spain.
