According to Bensing (1984) the arms were supposedly granted in 1347 by Emperor Charles IV. The arms historically showed a red castle (Rothen-Burg) as a canting element. The rose branches could have been a decorative element on the old medieval seals. The design appears clearly in the seal from the city made in 1698 as well as on another 17th century seal. | |||
